James Baroud awning fabric comes from the Netherlands and is made by the same supplier who makes the fabric for NASA's space suits. It is a fully synthetic technical fabric with micro pieces of aluminum woven into the surface. The aluminum is important because it helps reflect light which reduces temperature and thus provides greater comfort. The other benefit of using a high quality synthetic technical fabric is that it almost never molds, because the materials are resistant to bacterial growth. This is really important for an awning because they get wet and wrapped up all the time. Also, because all of our fabrics are sourced in Europe, we're bound by EU consumer safety regulation so there's little to no PFAS or fire retardants. As a result, the waterproofing has to come from the strength, weave and materials of the fabric itself rather than spraying a coating. This results in a longer lasting more durable awning.
